What do the certificates on a Rated People profile mean?
Certificates displayed on a tradesperson’s Rated People profile help homeowners understand whether a tradesperson holds the relevant qualifications and registrations required to carry out certain types of work safely and legally.
Some types of work in the UK require tradespeople to hold specific certifications. These credentials help demonstrate that the tradesperson is trained, qualified, and authorised to perform the work.
Below are some of the most common certificates you may see on a Rated People profile.
Gas Safe Registration
In the UK, it is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out gas-related work to be registered with Gas Safe.
Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe ID card, which includes their license number and expiry date. Homeowners should always ask to see this card and check the details before allowing any gas work to begin.
On Rated People, tradespeople are required to add their Gas Safe registration details to their profile. Until this certificate is verified on their account, they will not be able to purchase or quote on gas-related jobs through the platform.
Part P Certification (Electrical Work)
For domestic electrical work, it is important that the tradesperson holds Part P certification under the Building Regulations. This certification confirms that the tradesperson is competent to carry out electrical work safely and in line with UK regulations.
We recommend that homeowners:
- Review the tradesperson’s profile to check for Part P certification
- Ask to see proof of the qualification before work begins
If a tradesperson does not hold valid Part P certification, homeowners may need to contact their local building authority to arrange the appropriate certification for the work.
SafeContractor
SafeContractor is a recognised health and safety accreditation scheme. It shows that a business has been assessed for its health and safety procedures and compliance.
Tradespeople with SafeContractor certification have demonstrated that they follow recognised safety standards and risk management practices, which can provide additional reassurance for homeowners.
TrustMark
TrustMark is a UK government-endorsed quality scheme for tradespeople working in and around the home.
Tradespeople registered with TrustMark have been independently assessed and meet recognised standards of technical competence, customer service, and good trading practices.
Seeing the TrustMark accreditation on a profile indicates that the tradesperson has been approved through a scheme that meets the government’s TrustMark framework.
Public Liability Insurance
Some tradespeople may also choose to upload proof of their public liability insurance to their Rated People profile.
This is usually done by adding a photo or document of their insurance certificate to their photo gallery, allowing homeowners to view it when reviewing the tradesperson’s profile.
While this is not mandatory for all trades, it can help provide additional reassurance and transparency for homeowners when choosing who to hire.
