Audible-only alarms
These traditional systems trigger a loud external and internal siren when activated, but do not automatically contact anyone. They rely entirely on the noise deterring the intruder and alerting neighbors or passers-by. These systems are highly effective if you live in a close-knit community, have neighbors close by, or are part of an active neighborhood watch scheme.
Dialler burglar alarms
A dialler system automatically calls or texts a sequence of pre-programmed phone numbers (such as yourself, family members, or trusted neighbours) when triggered.
- Speech diallers: These plug into your property's physical landline. While reliable, they run the risk of being disabled if an intruder cuts your external phone line.
- GSM diallers: These operate using a mobile network SIM card. They cannot be physically cut, but they do require a strong local mobile signal and a topped-up SIM card to function.
Smart home security systems
Smart systems connect directly to your home Wi-Fi and alert you instantly via a smartphone app. They allow you to arm, disarm, and monitor your security from anywhere in the world. These versatile setups can be expanded with smart plugs (to turn on lamps remotely and mimic occupancy) and smart cameras that provide a live, real-time video feed of your property.
⚠️ Note: To maximise their effectiveness as a deterrent, ensure your smart system includes a highly visible, backlit external alarm box, as many basic DIY kits only include subtle internal sirens.
Remote signalling (monitored) alarms
This is the gold standard of home security. These systems are permanently connected to an external monitoring centre run by a security company. If the alarm is triggered, the centre confirms the breach and can contact the police directly.
Monitored systems require a monthly contract and strict compliance rules: you must nominate at least two keyholders who live within 20 minutes of the property, have their own transport, and know how to operate the system. Because the police handle thousands of false alarms, they will only respond to monitored systems installed by companies registered with the police and independently inspected to British Standards.

Will a burglar alarm lower my home insurance premiums?
Yes, a professionally installed system can substantially lower your annual premiums. However, if your insurer gives you a discount, you are contractually obligated to keep the alarm fully maintained. If a break-in occurs while the system is switched off or the wireless batteries are dead, your provider may refuse to pay out your claim.
What credentials should an installer have, and do I need planning permission?
Always look for installers accredited by the NSI (NACOSS) or the SSAIB, as insurance companies usually mandate these certifications. These bodies verify technical competence, background security vetting, and public liability insurance.
